Hi Scott,

Since I don't have an iPhone 5 I can't do a direct comparison and in order
to get objective results one really would need to have both phones and do a
number of scans under the exact same conditions. However, I definitely
believe that having perfect lighting and a super stabil platform along with
the right distance and focus will make a much bigger difference than the
small improvement in the camera itself. This of course is why the Standscan
is such a useful device, really a game changer with respect to OCR on the
iPhone. After all, if you look at a device such as the Pearl from Freedom
Scientific, it is just a specialized digital camera mounted on a special
stand so you get exactly what the Standscan provides, a stabil platform and
good distance/focus. Of course the Pearl has other specialized features like
automatic detection for when you turn a page and all that, but I bet as a
camera it's no better than what the iPhone camera is and there is no reason
why the iPhone shouldn't be able to provide impressive scan results. The 4S
and even more so the 5 certainly have the processing power for accurate and
fast OCR and from the results Sandy and Anne posted the Standscan really
does make all the difference especially for us visually impaired users.

Take care,
Sieghard

Hello Sieghard.
I have not tried the 4s, so I'm not aware of how that compares, but
was told that the saffire lends in the 5 made a difference in terms of
working with glare. Not sure how much that would effect OCR, but I
gather that you think not much. So thank you for that info!
I ordered the standscan today, and am verry much looking forward to it.

Thank you for the informative email,
Scott
