Also, if you put your finger on the keyboard area and hold it there, above the letters is a row of special characters. For example, approximately above the Y is the left parenthesis. Lift your finger from the screen, if the left parenthesis is not what you want, then flick down to get similar options: right parenthesis, brackets, braces, etc.
Just above that top row of letters is an entire row of special symbol options. The more I've used them, the easier it has been to memorize and find them quickly.
