Well, I'm not sure I can confirm the Amazon oddity. I can see all the books on my Wife's Kindle reader just by plugging it in to my computer and there they all are. I can copy them all to some place else as well. So I am beginning to believe that Apple just doesn't want to have you able to do this. Yet, the app is made by amazon. So who knows. My suspicion is that this might be one of the things Amazon had to do in order to please Apple, but that's just a hunch.
The bottom line is that the iPhone app behaves very differently in this regard than does the kindle itself.
