Hi, Sandy. I'm not sure what is happening with that error you're getting about the composite key being invalid when first loading KeePass. I can say that KeePass provides options for protecting your data by allowing you to use either a master password, a key file, your Windows user account, or some combination of these. I think if you use more than one of these, KeePass refers to the protection as a composite key. You can read about this here:
http://keepass.info/help/base/keys.html I noticed when I launch KeePass to check on a password, the Master Password which I use is ticked and I have to give it this password to get into the database. Below this Master Password is a tick box for a Key File which says none on my setup and a tick box for Windows user account which is not ticked on my setup. Is it possible that you've got one of the key file or Windows user account boxes ticked? That doesn't really seem likely since you're getting in the second time but I'm fishing here. You can create your own fields in KeePass which it calls custom strings. You do this in the Edit Entry dialog box when on one of your password records. For example, if you press enter when in your list of passwords, this dialog will open and be on the Entry tab where you enter Title, User Name, Password, URL, and Notes. The second tab of this dialog is the Advanced tab with an Add button where you can create your custom string fields. I think you can name these whatever you wish for each password record but I'd strongly suggest you use consistent custom string names for the same type of fields. For example, if you set up something like account number, I'd call it AcctNo across any record where you have an account number. Databases are just so much easier to use if you're consistent. Once you've set up your custom strings, you can copy their contents into the clipboard when on the password record containing them by pressing shift F10 followed by S to present the list of custom string names. Whichever one you select here will have its value copied to the clipboard. As you probably know, pressing ctrl b or ctrl c while on a password record will copy the user name and password, respectively, to the clipboard. All of these instructions are for accessing KeePass on the computer where I do the majority of my maintenance with it. The generate password feature is for those who want a secure password but don't want to think up one for themselves. KeePass will automatically generate one for you. It will certainly require use of the copy and paste feature as it will be random and not easily remembered. I hope the above helps but post back if you still have questions. Gallegos'; wale...@gmail.com Subject: KeePass Questions Raul, Lauren and Alan, I have set up a database in KeePasss and have a couple of questions. I have a file currently called Passwords.kdbx. When I try to oopen it I get the following message: Passwords.kdbx failed to load the specified file. The composite key is invalid. Make sure the composite key is correct and try again." If I attempt to open it a second time and enter the master password the file loads just fine. Not sure what this message means and what to do about it. I have successfully imported the file to Drop box and I can oopen it in either KeePass or MiniKeePass. So that's working well. Is there a way to add fields? I have some info in the Notes filed, like phone numbers and some adcount numbers, but I'd rather have them in separate fields. Finally, what about the Generate Password feature? Not sure what that does. I have found the Help docs useful and will continue to work with them. Much thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VIPhone" Google Group.
