I'll add to what Russ already posted. I used m3u files as a go-between to transfer playlists from my other media player to iTunes. They import just fine using the iTunes file import option. Once they are in iTunes, you can select them to sync to your iPhone.

Those are playlist files which determine the location of other files to play in specific order. Instead what you do is create a playlist in iTunes and sync that playlist.
