Karen, My experience is that using bluetooth headphones with the reader plugged in does not work. Maybe someone else has had better luck with that, but when I am using bluetooth headphones and plug the reader in, I do not get audio until I unplug the reader.
I did not have success with a splitter either, but my particular splitter might have been the problem. You can run the Square app on both devices loged into the same Square account. You will find that the app is a bit different between the iPad and the iPhone.
