Hi Laura,

Yes, DJ's suggestion to turn Voiceover off will prevent the phone from
switching to speakerphone automatically since without Voiceover it is normal
behavior that a call remains on the earpiece or headset (if one is connected
via wire or Bluetooth) until the user touches the speakerphone button which
is active during a call. However, as DJ also said, without Voiceover you
couldn't activate the button since you won't know where to tap and you might
even have to first hide the keyboard before you see the Speakerphone button.
Lastly, the triple click of the home key which turns off Voiceover if you
have this configured in Settings, General and Accessibility, will only work
right at the very beginning after you dial a phone number, the call connects
and you have not yet raised the phone to your ear. As soon as you put the
phone to your ear and then take it away the call goes to speakerphone and at
that point the triple click home does not work any more. This is why I
recommended you carefully test if the automatic switching behaves as it
should which means it really should not switch unless you take your phone
completely away from your head. One thing to keep in mind is that certain
cases if they are not put on the phone properly may cause this switching
because they might be too close to the proximity sensor and trigger the
switching. The proximity sensor cannot be felt, but it is I believe between
the upper edge of the phone and the opening in the glass where the earpiece
is. Using a headset will also prevent this problem entirely, but it is of
course not always practical or something you might want to do. Sorry if I
repeated a few things here and went into a lot of detail, but I don't know
how long you have had your iPhone and what you know and not know. As I said
before, if this happens too often when it shouldn't happen and your phone is
new it might very well be that the proximity sensor does not function as it
should.

Regards,

Sieghard

Subject: problem with speaker phone

HI All,

I have an I-phone 5. When I am on a call my phone will change to speaker
phone if I move my hand at all. Any ideas how to stop this from happening?
Is there a way to turn speaker phone off so that it will not go to speaker
phone?

Thank you for any help,

Laura
