I think selecting hundreds of lines of text on a PC could also be considered challenging, at least with the standard Windows commands.

An alternative, which could be implemented on an iPhone with VoiceOver would be to drop a mark at a certain spot in the text. Maybe something like place a mark could be added to the roter's edit options. Now you move to another point in the text and then you delete everything from where you are currently to where you placed the mark. Again, you could add this option to the roter.

This is how you delete text in Emacs, whether you're blind or sighted. Emacs is a popular editor used in Unix operating systems. Jamal Mazrui also added this feature to several of his JAWS scripts when using MS Office, NoteTab and other applications.

I prefer what I described above, but I also agree with Sieghard. I don't find the pinch gesture to be too challenging, but there are things I do still prefer to do on my PC.

Hi Mario,

Might I ask how you would suggest this can be improved? What gestures would
you like to see for selecting text and are there other touch screen devices
which offer a better experience? I guess I should rephrase this, do Android
phones offer a more user friendly experience when it comes to selecting text
since to my knowledge those are the only other somewhat accessible touch
screen devices out there? I have never used an Android device so forgive my
ignorance, but is selecting text and copy/cut/paste even accessible for a
blind user on an Android phone?

With a bit of practice I find it relatively easy to set my rotor to lines
and then use multiple pinch out gestures one after another to select a fair
bit of text. When you are talking about hundreds of lines then sure, I agree
that this would be a challenge, but then again I do have a computer and
while my iPhone is awesome and I can do lots of things with it, some things
are still done more efficiently on the computer and I would hazard a guess
and say that this holds true even for sighted people.

Sieghard

Yes, Sarah, you are right! But when you have hundreds lines to remove from a
text, this way I wish you "good luck!" and "see you tomorrow!".

The lack of very usual text editing functions, actually, in my opinion,
represents a boring limitation of IOS system and VO screen reader.

Mario.

Control+Shift+Up Arrow is a standard Windows keystroke. It
selects the text from your current location to the top of
the window. Then the text can be deleted. With an iPhone,
turn Quick Nav off, then down arrow until you come to the
first blank line after the text you want to delete. Press
Shift Up Arrow until all the text is selected, then press
Backspace to delete it.
