You can as long as you either buy the phone outright or have completed your
contract. If you buy an iPhone at the subsidized price and commit to a year
contract then you can't cancel out of that after let's say 3 or 4 months and
switch to a prepaid plan unless you pay a huge penalty. I am pretty sure
Kevin either bought his phone or has completed his contract. When I bought
my first iPhone which was an iPhone 4 in 2010 I bought the phone at full
price for the same reason. I felt I stay with my relatively inexpensive
voice plan only, but I lasted about one months before I switched to a data
plan because to me having this fantastically accessible and capable device
only to disable a large amount of what it could do was not what I wanted.

Now, Kevin, if you are not under contract with AT&T then why not get a less
expensive plan from an MVNO like Straight Talk which may not give you 2 Gig
a month, but which will give you voice and some data for around $50 which
would most likely be more than enough for the small amount of data used by
the Seeing Eye app.

I guess in your case you also might really want to consider something like a
Trekker Breeze. If you end up spending $400 or even more a year extra for a
phone plan which you apparently don't need, then you could buy a Breeze for
that, it would be a one-time cost which means the Breeze pays for itself
after 1 year.

hi Kevin,

Were you able to cancel your data plan and keep voice service on your
iPhone? If so, I didn't know you could do that. I thought you had to have
a data plan if you had an iPhone.

Hi.

The following is a combination of a request and an observation. It's not
intended as a complaint. It's just to demonstrate that what's not too
expensive for some can be quite expensive in other cases.

My request to Sendero is to have the GPS information stored on the iDevice.
Earlier this year I canceled my data plan for my iPhone to save money. I
pay $25 for three months of phone service. If I were to reaquire a data
plan, my only reason for doing so would be to use the Seeing Eye app. For
most of you, who already have a data plan, you would be spending just for
the cost of the app, and your data plan can be used for other purposes. In
my case, however, the app would cost me something like $700, because I'd
have to purchase a 2 year contract from AT&T, plus the cost of a minimum of
a year for the app, and if I decide I don't want the app after the first
year, I'm stuck with an extra year of data that I probably wouldn't have
gotten in the first place.

That's my take on things. Again, I'm not complaining, I'm just throwing
another thought on things. I probably won't be purchasing the app for a
while, but I probably will get it, as well as the 2 gig a month data plan.
I can find other uses for the data besides GPS, so it will be worth it for
me.

Have a good day, and don't work too hard.

GO REDS!
