I find your statement about BlindSquare not announcing the street you are on while in the car inaccurate. The street you are on is announced the entire time. Example, announcement says crossing 200 West and 1500 North. The road you are on is 200 West. The first street named is the street you're on, the second is the street you'll be crossing. Perhaps you need to go into settings and slow the voice down.
