I got around the problem by doing the following: 1. From the update screen, chose "purchased" tab. 2. Chose "all" and went through all my purchases until I found one that said "update". 3. pressed the update button on those and they seem to roll onto the device all right.
The App Store still comes up in the update screen but never displays "all apps ared up to date".
