This means you are using way too much pressure. The touchscreen is not pressure sensitive. You just need to barely touch the screen for your commands to register. Practice barely touching the display and two things will happen. First, your finger will stop hurting. Second, your commands will actually function without any errors. If you hear your finger tapping the display, you are most likely tapping too hard.
I use my iPhone for everything. I turn my computer on once every couple weeks. I am always tapping, flicking, and so forth, and I never have sore fingertips, hands, or wrists. It just takes practice.
