As far as I know, a tick is a check mark and looks like a letter v that is
longer on the right than it is on the left.

A couple of things. To do punctuation flip 3 fingers up. Just curious what
is a tick?
Also I really like this feature. It didn't take me but a few seconds to get
the hang of it. It may even become faster than using a keyboard over time. A
stylus may also help if I can get one.
