Hi, I agree with Jonathan's post. And while computer braille is very useful for programming and such, contracted braille is vitally important for anyone who wants to read quickly. I have read many, many books aloud to my son, and I can't imagine that I could read uncontracted braille quickly enough to do so. It's important for blind kids to learn literary braille, since they'll spend a great deal of time in school reading and writing, and the experience of writing should be as uncomplicated as possible.
As for being able to search in braille, I have found that the item chooser often does the trick, particularly on websites. In iOS 7, pressing Space with I takes you to the search field in the item chooser, which is an improvement over previous versions of VoiceOver.
