There is a new feature in Do Not Disturb Settings that was introduced with iOS 7. It lets you specify whether you're alerted to notifications when the device is unlocked or not. This has made the feature far more useful for me. I read books from iBooks and kindle without being constantly interrupted, and yet people I really need to hear from are in my favourites, so they can still reach me. Good to have the choice. Joanthan
