Files don't have to be zipped up to be transferred by iTunes or DropBox, but from what I've read, books you want to read in BARD do need to be zipped up before they're transferred.

What happens if the file is no longer zipped? Can it still be transferred

I have had good luck using iTunes to transfer books.
You're right, you might have to restart BARD to have it show the books.
I haven't had any issues authorizing books to play.

You can also use iTunes to transfer books to your phone. I haven't done it
myself yet, but a few different people have posted instructions to the list.
You may run into the same problem though, where you won't be able to authorize
those books if your phone can't get to the authorization servers for the mobile
app.

For example, Russ Kiehne posted these instructions to the list:

Doing some research, I found the following, hope it helps:
Loading books into the BARDmobile app

The BARDmobile app is able to play any DAISY/NISO 2005 formatted book. To load
the
books into the iOS device for playback use the following instructions.
1. If not in a ZIP archive format. You should compress the directory holding
the books
files into a ZIP file.
2. Connect the iOS device to your computer with a USB cable.
3. Open the iTunes application and select the iOS device button at the right of
the
main window.
4. select the "Apps" radio button on the main screen.
5. At the bottom of the Apps screen is a section titled "File Sharing" with a
column
list of apps. One of those will be the BARDmobile app select it.
6. Press the "Add…" button located in the bottom right of the screen. This will
give
you a dialog to select the ZIP file from step one. The book will then be added
to
the app. You may need to restart BARDmobile to see the new book.
NOTE:
At this time the BARDmobile app will only play DAISY/NISO 2005 books. Other
DAISY
formats such as DAISY 2.02 and ePub 3 will simply fail to load.

If you have dropbox, you shold be able to transfer it to the phone. Keep it

The only catch is authenticating the book with bard. If their system is
down, it may not authenticate it.

Subject: Interesting dellema with the bard ap.

Hi all.
So, I added some books to my wishlist like I always do from the website on
my computer. Before when I'd do this I'd go to the ap on my phone, into
my
wishlist and download them. But, now, when I go into the ap, they're not
there. I know they've been added, but they're not there. I've closed the
ap
using the ap switcher...
reopened it... but still nothing. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
