Ahaa, but the Mini was ever different and this a fundamental issue. whenever a message was open and highlighted then, all those controls were present. It seemed counter-intuative for it not to show a Compose button before that.
A quick search shows that in iOs7, it is one of the flaky glitches that comes and goes; the Compose button is generally bottom right. Oddly, when I used to find it on the Mini, I thought it was up the top. I used to place finger near an extreme point and flick right into the corner first before fkicking the other way to explore for such things.
