Hi, Practising with the back side of CD cases is a very good way to start. Similarly, the back outside cover of a paperback will render results. Lastly, something such as the stand scan pro will definitely make things easier as you can position the phone on the top and then slowly move your item within the view of the camera inside the box. I find this particularly useful when I want to find the barcode on something cylindrical such as a tin or a bottle or a jar.
As for using the app: I wouldn't complicated, I wouldn't have multiscan is turned on and neither would I play with navigation or history, I would just double tap the scan button on the top right, search around for the code, and then wait till I hear a sound that indicates that the barcode has been found. Then just wait a little longer for the recognition to happen.
