What you describe when the Jambox is plugged in is normal behavior. I am not sure why more companies don't make products which can be used as well while they are plugged in, but that's beside the point, if the Jambox is plugged in you can't use it. Now, as for the Jambox not staying on while it's unplugged, have you checked your charging cable and charger? Make sure everything is properly oplugged in and there is power to the outlet you are using. If all that is OK you might want to try a different micro USB cable in case the one you are using is defective. To me it sounds like you plug the Jambox in but it is in fact not charging and the battery is so run down that it doesn't come on or if it does immediately shuts off again.
