It supports streaming, so timelines are updated as soon as tweets arrive. The notifications I was talking about are push notifications. Tweetlist checks every few minutes and alerts you, but Twitterrific is always waiting, so can push an alert immediately. It also supports more than mentions and DMs - it does follows, favorites of your tweets, and retweets even where you are not mentioned.
