Hello Sieghard, I want to thank you publicly for sharing the below on list. You never know how many people you help with such thorough and clear information. For example, I knew some of this, but not the crucial part about ripping with iTunes. I knew it was possible, but I am still at the stage of dreading all things iTunes -- trying to get over it but not there yet -- and I now feel that I could rip with it.
I am a high beginner or a low moderate in terms of skill level. I often feel that I can't offer anything to this community because what I know is not advanced enough. But what I can offer is my respect and my thanks, and something I am about to share in my next post. Sieghard and everyone, I send you a big THANK YOU! MP3 is what is called a "Lossy" format. At some point some smart people at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany figured out that the human ear/brain does not hear certain sounds and by filtering them out of a music recording it is possible to greatly compress the file size of said recording without significantly changing how the human ear perceives the recording. Anyhow, in order to extract the songs from an audio CD you have to "rip" the CD. You can do this with iTunes or any number of other programs which you can find online and which often are free. However, I suggest you use iTunes. As Chris already pointed out, go to "Edit" and "Preferences" and then on the General tab tab down to where you see something about what you should do when you insert a CD. I suggest you select to "Import and Eject". Then go into the Import Settings and select the format and quality. I prefer the iTunes M4A format which has a file extension of "AAC" (it stands for Advanced Audio Coding) and my personal choice is to rip at iTunes Plus quality which is 256 kb/s. This is a very good quality and matches what Apple uses when you buy songs from them, but still the files are relatively small. If you rip a CD with iTunes it is automatically added to your iTunes music library and after that is done you can connect your phone, go to your device in iTunes, select the Music tab and then choose to sync all music or only selected playlists, albums, artists or genres. If you choose to sync selected music you have to check that checkbox and then continue to tab until you find the list view of how you want to sync, by artist, by album or by genre. Here you can arrow down the list of artists, albums or genres and check those you want, then tab to Apply or select Sync from the File menu under Devices. I have a few cds here. When I open up the cd, all the files show up with a .cda extention. How do I get them on to my harddrive, and then put them on my iphone? I figured they would have shown up as mp3 files or something, but how do I get them in to a format I can listen to on my pc and my iphone? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VIPhone" Google Group.
