One thing to think about is that if you have more than 9 items in a
folder,
it will create a page 2 and you will find the rest of the apps in a second

When you say you tried the search function, are you referring to the
spotlight search which you get to by doing a three finger swipe down on a
home page or by using the handwriting mode, which you accomplish by
starting to spell the application with handwriting mode selected in the
roter on any home page. If you've only tried one of the two, it might be
worth it to try the other.
