Hi, They don't have to disable it, all they had to do was to turn it off and then you can't track it until they turn it back on. I guess the only thing that could have been done was to remotely lock it so it can't be used again which makes it of no value at all to whoever has it.

You can read what address the device is, but beyond that someone would have to look at a map. But, just knowing how to quickly get someone to that point before your phone is turned off could help you retrieve it.
