Hi all. Yesterday I purchased the Slingbox 500 and here are a few things I have
found:
I had my neighbour help me by correctly connecting the component cables. I
chose not to connect using the HDMI cables. With the model 500 you can set up
the sling box using your computer.
1. The Slingplayer for iPhone is not perfect but quite accessible. The buttons
are graphics but there is a tag below the button that tells you what it does.
I have labelled some of the buttons and I can rely on the tags below the
buttons.
One example is the tag which says "return" which a sighted person sees in the
centre of the graphical button. This is actually the back button so I labelled it
accordingly. My neighbour told me that my label does not change what he sees on the
screen - I had always wondered about this.
2. the channel guide is accessible on the iPhone screen. Once you choose the
channel just double tap on it and it will connect. You get a percentage of the
current program as well as the description from the guide.
3. However, the channel guide on the iPad is not accessible - it is an image. VoiceOver
says "empty list".
4. The keypad is a little tricky to get to but once you do the same pattern happens. The
graphic label might say "blackchannelentry button" which is followed by the
channel number. You tap the button, not the number and the graphic proceeds the number. I
relabelled those as well for faster entry.
It is definitely usable but takes some effort.
When playing a program double tap the screen and the control bar appears.
However, I haven't yet figured out how to stop a program from playing-
double-tapping with two fingers does not work.
I have 30 days to check it out and other than the iPad issue I'm happy with it
to date although there needs to be some accessibility improvements.
Both the Slingbox 500 and 350 come with a IR remote but you cannot set up the
350 on the computer so you would have to have sighted assistance during the
initial setup.
I hope that some of you find this information helpful.
