Add folder is what I ended up doing. Yes, I did get all my music to
show up once I did that, however I now have over a thousand duplicates
which I have to go through by hand and delete. What a pain! But I
guess I did solve the original problem. If only the solution was more
elegant.

Interestingly, regarding the location question, on the old system the
files were located under iTunes\iTunesMedia. But on the new system,
after I performed the add folder, the files were placed in
iTunes\iTunesMedia\Music. This may have had something to do with the
original problem. I don't know.
