Having the screen curtain on has no affect on battery life. I asked this question to Apple Accessibility and received a reply that it had no battery saving effect since the screen is artificially blackened, if you set your brightness to 100% it will remain at that level screen curtain or not and it's screen brightness which does make a difference.
