Having the screen curtain on has no affect on battery life. I asked this
question to Apple Accessibility and received a reply that it had no battery
saving effect since the screen is artificially blackened, if you set your
brightness to 100% it will remain at that level screen curtain or not and
it's screen brightness which does make a difference.

Not sure how much of a difference it makes, but some say that turning on the
screen curtain with a 3 finger triple tap has made a difference in battery
life. I have mine turned on most of the time, especially when riding home on
the bus. I think I've gotten used to it so much that I have to be reminded
to turn it off when my wife looks at my phone.
