The Old Reader got cleaned up and was taken over by another company. Now,
it's much more responsive and no issues with delays or anything. They got
overwhelmed by all the Google reader refugees as you mentioned, but all
those problems are long gone. 
Pertinennt to iOS, it updates on Feeddler very fast. If you're a website
user, the Instapaper integration and other sharing options are verry handy
too.

I use InoReader with Feeddler. I tried The Old Reader, but it had horrible
availability issues when Google Reader went away, so I switched to
InoReader. I just haven't bothered to switch back, even though I know The
Old Reader doesn't have those problems it did when so many people went to it
when Google shut down Google Reader.
