Actually, I had done that   and, still had no success in solving the issue. 
It was the simple mute button.

How silly I felt.

Try going into Settings, Sounds, and then see what your volume is set at. 
Flick upward to increase the volume.  I had to help friends of mine just 
yesterday with the same issue.  I had them set the sounds option pretty high 
and we tested Reminders, and it worked fine.  Also, in the Sounds section, 
turn off the option of "Sounds with Buttons On."  Turn it to Off and see if 
that works better too.  I hope I'm not overwhelming you with all this 
information and hope it helps.  Take care.
