One of the things that I don't think were answered for the original question.
With windows and macs it handles documents the same. If your instructors send you a document written on windows say a .doc file, a mac will open it know problem. Same with .docx, .txt and so on. It works the same if you write something on your mac and have to send it to your instructor. There's pages and text edit and I believe microsoft word for mac as well, but I don't use that one.
