FaceTime audio uses either wifi or cellular data exclusively for the calls. Also calls can only be placed from and to other Apple devices registered with FaceTime. Regular calls are placed over the GSM network and can be placed to both Apple and non Apple devices.

This then brings up another question--what is the difference between a
facetime audio call and a regular phone call?

Hi, there are two ways. Go into your contacts and if someone has an
iPhone for until you find FaceTime audio call double tap that and it
will open the FaceTime session and call there is also a FaceTime video.
Also you can use Siri and say something like face time then the name of
the person and then iPhone and it will do it for you. It opens up a
FaceTime audio session and calls the person. God bless, Wren Langley
