Switch control cannot be activated until a Bluetooth switch device has been
paired with the iOS device. Switch control causes a scanning box to move from
one item to the next on the screen. When the correct item is highlighted, the
user taps the switch which activates the highlighted item. When the highlight
is not moving, tapping the switch starts the highlight. I set switch control up
for a blind person with severe CP. A head switch was used. An iPad was mounted
to the wheelchair. A basic communication board app was loaded and locked on the
iPad. The person uses the switch to control what the iPad says so he can ask
for what he wants and basically communicate how he is feeling.

For those with higher cognitive functioning, switch control can control all of
the functioning of the iOS device. As I said before, access is typically rather
slow.
