Hi Debbie,

You are correct, downloading some apps is not such a big deal as long as
it's not more than a couple of dozen. You could always check to see if the
apps are in your library and, if so, just hook up your new phone, check the
Apps radio button and then go to your list of apps, check the ones you want
and press Sync, then they will all get transferred to your phone.

As for any other settings, email accounts, passwords, text message history
etc. you just have to check.

Hooking up your old phone won't mess anything up, iTunes keeps track of
multiple devices so yes, you could hook up your old phone, select to
transfer purchases which should put everything that's on your phone but not
in your library into iTunes. Then if you do another encrypted backup of your
old phone you could try to restore it to your new phone.

Good luck,

Sieghard

HI Sieghard,

I didn't sync the apps with ITunes at the same time that I did the encrypted
backup; however, I had synced them prior to that date. I believe that when I
hooked up my new phone to ITunes it asked something about transferring the
ID to this phone and I think we said yes to that. Maybe that is why the apps
don't show up?

I'm thinking about connecting the old phone to ITunes again to see what
happens but I don't want to mess anything up more than it is.

I never had my apps in folders anyway so it doesn't matter really if I have
to download them again from purchased apps in the app store but I wonder if
the passwords will have been saved since I did the encrypted backup? If not,
there aren't that many that require passwords so I can reenter them if I
have to.

What are your thoughts on this whole thing?

Thank you so much!

Debbie

Hi Debbie,

Did you ever sync your apps with iTunes? If you didn't then iTunes wouldn't
have a record as to which apps you had and how you had arranged them with
respect to folders and homescreen layout.

Regards,

Sieghard

Subject: Question about encrypted backup and apps!

Hi all,

I did an encrypted backup of my IPhone 4S and now have a new 5S. I did a
restore from encrypted backup and it did save all of my settings and
everything is exactly as it was on my 4S except that it didn't download my
apps. I did the encrypted backup because it was said on this list that it
would save my passwords so that I didn't have to relog in to apps for which
I have a subscription or need to log in with a password. Did I misunderstand
something? I assumed that my apps would be downloaded to my phone.

Do I need to go into purchased apps and redownload them individually and
then the benefits of the encrypted backup will be realized in terms of not
having to log into those apps with my passwords?

Thank you!

Debbie
