Hi.

The site is confusing as to which model I would need. It doesn't really
explain the difference between the CT 50 and the CT 80. Which of these
works for you?

Bill,

Quite a few on the list including myself use a hermostat from
www.RadioThermostat.com <http://www.RadioThermostat.com> . You can buy the
unit from that website for $139, but I know in the States people have bought
it from Home Depot for $99 and you can also find it on Amazon. Just go to
the Radio Thermostat website first and get the exact item/model name and
then paste that into Amazon.

The app is very accessible, it could use a few small improvements, but it's
at a point where it's minor and I for one just haven't taken the time to try
and track down the developer to see if they would like to work on this with
me. Maybe somebody else weill or maybe I will do it this fall/winter. For me
this is sort of a seasonal thing since up here in northern British Columbia
few residences have air conditioning but it gets cold in the winter so the
thermostat and its corresponding app are mostly required from October
throughout May.

There will of course be most likely more choices later this year and into
next year as Apple rolls out iOS 8 which has what they call "Home Kit". This
is a developer kit which gives companies a framework for developing home
automation devices and apps which all use a certain standard. This will
include thermostats, electronically controlled locks, lights and hopefully
appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, stoves etc. I am looking
forward to replacing my old top loading Maytag washer with a more modern and
water/electricity efficient front loader, but I really am hoping that
something I can fully control from my iPhone will become available.

Anyhow, the thermostat from Radio Thermostat works well and it's very
reliable, I have had 1 at home and 2 at my business for I think 2 years now
and they are great. They do, of course, require professional installation
since they require an additional cable which carriers a 24 Volt charge to be
run from your furnace to the thermostat. This is in addition to the normal
3-wire cable. If your existing cable contains 4 wires and the fourth one
isn't used it's going to be super easy, if not a new cable with 4 wires
needs to be installed first and of course depending on how far your
thermostat is from the furnace this may require opening up some walls etc.
The 24 Volt cable (it might only be 12 Volts, can't remember) provides power
to the thermostat which is required to run the WiFi module which connects
the thermostat to your home WiFi. The thermostat also has 4 double A
batteries which are backup in case of a power outage and so it doesn't lose
its settings.

There is an option to hook it up to a normal wall outlet with an AC adapter
instead of having power come via that fourth wire from the furnace, but this
of course means it has to be within 5 or 6 feet of an outlet and that you
will have a cable running down the wall from the thermostat to the outlet.

Lastly, if you want to read more about this, just search the archives for
"Radio Thermostat".

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi.

Can someone recommend a good internet or Bluetooth thermostat with an app
that works well with Voiceover? Thanks.

Bill
