I'm not sure why you've heard conflicting reports. The Kindle app does indeed
work and is accessible on the iPhone. If there's something you want to do with
it that you're afraid won't work, maybe you need to be more specific about your
concerns. I read lots and lots of books with mostly my braille display but also
by starting scrolling and just listening but if there is something more
complicated you want to do that is causing you to think you should get the
actual Kindle, ask about that. I have one of the old Kindles - I think now it
would be called a keyboard Kindle - and I hardly use it any more, but I realize
the newer Kindle stand-alone machines may be more accessible.

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper
thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:
"This I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord
never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness."
(Lamentations 3:21-23 ESV)
