Thanks David. This could well be true but it could also be the case that they
were simply providing one easy way of doing that. According to support
instructions provided by Jawbone for a Bluetooth headset, for example, simply
turning Bluetooth off then on again resets the Bluetooth driver stack. Given
this, I wonder whether a normal, soft reset would also do the same thing.
https://jawbone.com/kb/articles/318.html

In any case, I agree with Sieghard that a force-reset is unlikely to harm
anything.

Cheers,

Grant

Un`fortunately, I do not remember where I read this information. It was a few
years ago. That said, It came from a reputable source of technology info.

Hi David,

That may be the case, but is this documented anywhere that you know of? In any
case, I’ve no qualms about admitting I was wrong if it does more than force a
shut down.

The reboot does more than the shut-down. I am not aware of everything it does,

bluetooth and wifi. I suspect it also rebuilds the VO driver stacks.

Hi Sieghard, I don't, of course, have access to how Apple set this up
internally, but it is my opinion that forcibly resetting an iOS device simply
forces the system to cut the power so that the device can reboot. That is why
it is a useful command to perform when you cannot power off the phone by any
normal means. It is therefore my view that if you can reboot your device
normally, this force-reset method won’t achieve anything or reset anything that
a normal reboot wouldn’t. To use another analogy, if my desktop PC has a
problem that is not resolved by rebooting, why would it be resolved by
unplugging the power cord while the PC is powered up, causing an improper shut
down? I know this topic has come up before and other listers don’t agree with
my view, and I am more than happy to stand corrected and admit that I am
totally out to lunch on this one. However, based on my understanding of the
force-reset method, I am fairly sure I am correct about this.

Hi Grant,

Doing a reset by holding the power and home buttons may not be something you
want to do every day and shouldn’t have to do, but it also won’t hurt. It will
definitely reset more things than a simply shutdown and reboot of the phone and
in your case I’d try it. I would probably remove all apps from the app switcher
and do a regular reboot, then do the reset and while it may not fix your
problem, I highly doubt it would hurt anything just as pressing the reset key
on a computer won’t hurt anything either.

Sieghard

Thanks Donna! It definitely takes time to get used to listening to a voice that
quickly, but if you’re interested, you could try cranking up your rate a bit
when you’re just listening to system prompts (like opening the mail app and
browsing to a folder) then slowing it down to read the actual content. Of
course, this is assuming you can change your rate. :)

I just wanted to say...Wow!!! I can't understand but every other word VO says
when the speed is set to 100% Heck, my brain or ears can't even keep up to
follow along with VO is saying. LOL! Wish I had your talent, it would make
doing tasks on my device faster. 65% is the fastest speed that I'm able to go
and still be able to understand VO and comprehend what I'm listening to VO
reading to me.

Hi all,

I normally keep my speech rate at 100%, but I have just discovered that it is
in fact stuck there. Adjusting it from the rotor, or from the VO preferences
page, has no effect. Actually, that’s not entirely true; VO occasionally
announces something using the lower rate, but otherwise sticks to 100%. For
example, if I am moving through a bulleted list on a web page, VO announces the
“bullet” symbol in whatever speech rate I have set, but then reverts to 100% to
read the rest of the text.

I am using iOS 7.1.2 with an iPhone 5S and the default U.S. English voice. I’m
not sure that this is a big enough deal to warrant extensive troubleshooting
(e.g. restoring the phone or resetting all settings), but I wanted to inquire
whether anyone has ever had a similar problem or has any tips.

Thanks,

Grant
