Holding the phone very still will also help with taking a clear picture of the document.

If you point the back of the phone towards whatever it is you want to scan, the camera from your perspective will be at the top right corner of the phone, just below the power button. You will have to have a reasonably good sense of orientation to make sure the camera points roughly to he middle of whatever it is you are scanning. I find a good way for me is to lay the phone flat on top of the page or the envelope I am scanning. I estimate where the middle is and put the top right corner of the phone there. Then I lift the phone straight up and away from the page about 8 or 10 inches. If it's a smaller piece of paper 4 or 6 inches might be enough. It's important to make sure you don't tilt the phone too much and also that the edge of your document is relatively straight in relationship to the edges of the phone. Then go ahead and take the picture and hope for the best. As others pointed out, lighting is also important. I think most would agree at this point that Prizmo and Text Grabber work best. Keep in mind that we are within a week or so (according to KNFB) of the release of the KNFB Reader for the iPhone. This has been discussed extensively on the list and there are some Podcasts available. KNFB Reader is relatively expensive at $99, but it is made for the blind and has specific features which should allow you to take the best picture possible. In the end the picture quality is the most important variable, if Prizmo or Text Grabber get a perfect image they do a great job with the OCR.
