Hi Siegard, The battery was fully charged at the start of the process. it was only towards the end that my wife told me there was a message onscreen which said failed. and after this point absolutely nothing!.

You may have to force the phone into DFU mode. To do this, after connecting the phone to iTunes, hold down the Home and Power buttons together for about six seconds, then release the power button while keeping the Home button held down until iTunes detects the phone in DFU mode.
