Otterbox keeps the I device in place with little clamps around the edge of the phone. The clamps can break and loosen. Ballistic holds the I device in snugly by form fitting the device in between the upper and lower parts of the case. The Ballistic cases have much thicker reinforced corners compared to the Otterbox. Also, the plastic case is much thicker overall than the Otterbox case. My Ballistic case came with a rubbery outer shell that went over the plastic case. This rubbery shell is as thick as a number of cases that sell only a case like this. Ballistic adds this as just one of four layers of protection.
What made the final decision was visiting stores to check out the cases in person. When I held both cases in my hand and felt the I device in each case, it was clear to me the Ballistic case was quite superior. Fortunately, I live in Chicago with many stores. If you live in an area with a number of stores, then have a tactile exploration of both. All the stores I visited were willing to take the case out of the box for me to feel and they allowed me to place my I device inside as well. If you are not so fortunate where you live, order both online at a site with a generous return policy and keep the one you like and return the other. A tactile evaluation of cases is a must for the blind iPhone and I device owner.
