I download links in Safari, Filer and Downloads all the time. It works much better if you have an account with Sendspace that lets you download faster. The free links are very very inconvenient and will often time out.
If I want to copy a download link, I tap t.ice and hold, then choose "copy linx" from the menu. Or I go into fealer or another similar app and browse and then, in the case of filer, switch to downloads tab and download it that way.
