Robert, The method I described several times using the delete button at the top and the edit mode button and delete button which are associated with each title is how Audible told me one should delete books and it is 100% reliable for me.

Then double-tap the delete button that is just to the left of the book title. If this works, you will get the prompt telling you that your bookmarks have been saved and you can delete the book. This does not work every time for me but I have always been able to make it work after a few tries.
