Try launching Siri and simply saying "Good Bye" to immediately shut it down.
I'm not sure if this will help, but seems to me that's what I've done in the
past with this problem.

Subject: phone audio sounds horrible, please help
Hey guys,
OK, a very concerning thing happened with my iphone 5. My iphone audio
on the phone side, every single call sounds horrible. The audio volume
went way down, and everyone sounds distorted. I ahve tried raising the
volume, but nothing. This is pretty concerning.
The speaker sounds fine though. Any ideas?
