This has been brought up in connection with selecting a default sound for emails where the behavior is the same. This is obviously a bug Apple needs to fix, but for now I found you can work around this by not trying to swipe to the list of tones. Just double tap on the button where you select the sound for text messages, then touch the screen somewhere in the middle so that focus is placed into the list of tones. For me at least this allows me to then swipe left and right and find the tone I want and I was even able to swipe left all the way to the Back button and then forward again without getting kicked out. It appears you only get kicked out when you immediately start swiping right. Let us know if that worked.
