How old is the phone? I'm having that same issue with my work iPhone 5. It predates iOS 8, so in my case, it is hardware related. If I press it at an angle it sometimes works.
For a while, I used the assistive touch menu but that got to be a pain, so now I just let it lock itself after 5 minutes if I can't get the button to work. I'll probably ask that it get repaired in the next couple of months, or just let them upgrade me to a newer phone since this one is 2 years old and gets lots of use.
