Hi Wayne, On my 5S it always goes all the way to 1%, it sits there for quite a while depending on course on what I am doing and then at some point it will say that it's shutting down. I think it was on the iPod Fifth Gen where it would shut down at 12%. Haven't tried it since iOS 8 to see if that has been addressed or not.
Carol, as for the automatic rebooting of the iPhone, that is a feature of the Lightning port and any iDevice that has a Lightning port will do this.
