Jim, If the person is in your contacts, then their name will show up. If not, their number will show. If a reply is sent then it goes to the whole group. I think you can mute messages from a person or the group in iOS 8 but I'm not sure how this works or if you can put a time limit on how long you want messages to be muted. Perhaps someone else can explain.
