It is possible to have both Alex and the female high quality voice downloaded and to set either one as default. If you like Alex occasionally for reading longer texts than you can add US English to in the language rotor and then download Alex and select him as your US English voice. This way your default will be the female high quality voice and if you turn the rotor to language and flick up or down it will change to Alex. If you want Alex as your default voice also add US English and download Alex, but then select him as the default dialect and select the female high quality voice under US English, More Options. This way it will be reversed from what I described above.
