Hi,
I've seen plenty of cases where the app in question asks you to turn on
location services by going into Settings, Privacy and Location Services, and
location services will thereafter be set to Always even when the app isn't
being used. And there are other apps, like some native Apple apps, which will
request location services and you'll notice that the setting for the app is
"while using". Examples of the latter include Maps, Compass and Passbook.
Perhaps there's some special code under the hood which allows the "while using"
setting, but since I know nothing about app programming I can only speculate.
Seems to me that the "while using" setting would be the ideal.

I bet there's someone out there who can elaborate on this much better than I
can.

Tom

Subject: Location tracking, some clarification needed

  Hi

I am using Ios 8.1.1 on a 4S, and am trying to understand the location
services and tracking. There are 2 options, always on, meaning it can run even
in the background, and then the "never" option. Now my question: if you choose
the "never" option, and you use an app that needs to use the location services,
will it ask for permission to use location services, or will one be presented
with the dialog where you need to go into settings, privacy, and so on, to
enable location services for the particular app. I would have thought that
there might be an third option, saying something like "when needed" making it
possible for the app to get the necessary permission to use location services.
Am I missing something here, or will apps ask for permission and then, when you
close the app, will location services be switched off again for that app?

  Any help appreciated
