Jessica,
I assume the basic instructions would be the same, but some of the keystrokes may be different, e.g. Control+1, Control+2 and so on hotkeys are I think Option or Command + the numbers. Since I have been a PC/Windows and Jaws user for the last 25 years I can’t help you with details on how the Mac version of iTunes works exactly, but I am sure others on the list can give you the relevant information. Can you please resend these instructions or according to what it would be on a Mac? I know that in iTunes 12 some things changed, but there are a lot of concepts and other things where the Podcast would still apply and maybe give you a better understanding about iTunes. I think iTunes must be the singlemost hated piece of software out there and for the most part this is because of people’s perception that it’s inaccessible which maybe it was at one point many many years ago. Right now iTunes is actually very accessible with a few kwirks and for the most part the tab key and F6 are keys to remember and use a lot and of course you have your shortcuts to get to the different libraries like music, movies, TV shows, apps and so on. These are Control key Plus you rnumber keys in the top row of the keyboard. As for your question, what you may want to try is use the column browser. This will display 3 listviews, Genre, Artist and Album. For example, I have a bit over 4,000 songs in iTunes. When I open iTunes it always lands on the Genre column which in my case has 19 genres, but Jaws will say 1 of 20 when I am at the top because in each column you have an “All” entry at the top. If I tab once I get to my second column listview which has 211 artists, but there are 213 entries because of “All” and “Compilations” which show up at the top. A second tab takes me to the albums column which for my library has 362 albums and again the “All” on the top. A third tab now puts me on the list view of all my music which if I put focus on “All” in each column has 4117 entries and Jaws will read out the first song, artist, album and length and say it is 1 of 4117. If I select a particular artist in the artist column, for example if I type in “e a” to go to “Eagles” and then tab twice to get to my music listview, Jaws will read out the first song like this: Hotel California, Time 6:29, Eagles, Album: Eagles, Greatest Hits Vol2, Genre Rock, Track number 1 of 10 This is then followed by Jaws saying “1 of 36” which means in total I have 36 tracks by the Eagles. Now, what you want to do to get this is as follows: 1. Open iTunes (I am assuming you use a PC/Windows) 2. Type Control+F to get to the search field 3. Now tab twice and you should be on a radio button for “Music” which I assume is checked. If it isn’t, use the shortcut key Control+1 (in the number row above the keyboard) to put focus on the music library 4. Tab past all the rest of the radio buttons. I can’t remember what the default is since you can customize which buttons you have showing up here, e.g. Movies, TV Shows, Apps, Tones etc. 5. After a few tabs you should get to a “More” button and if you tab past it you will find 3 more radio buttons, My Music, Playlists and iTunes Store, make sure “My Music” is checked. 6. If you tab past iTunes Store you’ll find the button for your device if it is connected. If it is not connected you should hear one of the following: Songs, albums, artists, composers, or Genres. This is the important button because only if you select songs from this list (use spacebar to activate the button, then tab once and you can arrow up and down in the list) can you enable the column browser. 7. Make sure you are on Songs and press enter, the button should now say :”Songs button”. 8. Now enable the column browser either by going to the View menu and arrow down to Column Browser (shortcut is “c”) or you can simply use the shortcut key Control+Shift+B for “Show Column Browser”. This is actually a toggle and if you press it again it will again hide the column browser. 9. You can also make a few selections as to what is shown in the column browser, below is the entire menu and I said beside each item if I have it selected or not: Genres – checked Artists – checked Albums – checked Composers – not checked Groupings – not checked (not totally sure what this does) Group compilations – checked Use album artist – checked That’s it, once you set this up it will always be there and your main music list view will always be a listview. By the way, by default if you type in that listview it will go to artist. For example, if I type “SH” it will take me straight to the first song I have by Shania Twain. I always land on the Genre column if I open iTunes as long as I was in the music library when I closed it. If I was in Apps, then of course it will reopen to that library. But what I meant to say is that if I want to do something to my phone, all I have to do is connect my phone, then open iTunes and since I am on the genre column, I just shift tab 5 times to get to the device button.
