It will alert to lightning in the area, but that is as close as I have come to getting severe weather alerts. That and heavy rain. For severe weather, the Tornado app from the Red Cross does the job pretty well. If you want severe thundrestorm alerts then you can enable the emergency alerts button in Settings/Notification Center, and at the bottom of the screen. I finally turned that one off though since I was being alertted for alerts in the middle of the night. I'm glad that those alerts were not prevented with Do Not Disturb. Then again, there's a reason why I don't want to be disturbed, especially if I am in a sound sleep.
