I suspect you're talking about the combined URL/search field. Other browsers have also adopted this space saving concept. If you enter a URL then you'll be taken to that URL. If Safari doesn't recognize that you've typed a URL then it'll perform a web search for you.

The Google app is an interface into Google Search and Google Now. If you want a Safari replacement then you want to check out Google Chrome.

Speaking of TuneIn Radio, today I had old episodes of Fresh Air playing.
I don’t remember where I left the program before closing it, perhaps I
did a double finger tap to silence what was playing, or might even have
hit the stop button before closing it from the app switcher. At any
rate, when I was in other applications if I double tapped such as to
stop dictation, the Fresh Air stream started playing again. Once again
I checked to see if it was in the app switcher so I could close it, but
it was not there.

I stopped following the program thinking that would clear it out, then I
hit the follow button again. Guess what, it was still running, even
though it was still not showing in the app switcher. I then opened
TuneIn Radio again and canceled out of Fresh Air and then closed the
app. It’s all finally gone now, nothing more is in what was some kind of
buffer, I guess. This has never happened before. Perhaps there is some
setting I accidentally touched on?

As for Safari, is the way to download audio podcasts
through downcast or podcast, since I’ve read that Safari can’t download
audio? If that is the way to do it, no problem. Also, I suddenly have
Safari opening to apple.com and it was pure advertising. The page
didn’t look anything like this when I’ve opened Safari before. I
cleared that out and put in Google, but I’m not sure that will stick, as
in it will remain my home page as happens on a regular computer. Also
there is some combo box showing in the search field above the search
button on the google.com page. Combo boxes in search fields? What is
that about? Is there an ideal button or tab to select for doing
searches? Pages?

When google loaded, I saw an ad for search hands free just say ok
Google. The little video you see from the apple store wasn’t useful at
all. Someone mentioned the Google App on list today. Is that something
that I can substitute for using Safari as a web browser? And is there a
way to get rid of pop ups? I believe I heard that word when looking at
the apple page that came up when I opened safari.
